WEIRD EXPERIENCES WORKING BESIDE WAR ZONES

Inspired by a strange encounter with stealth bombers in the Black Desert of Jordan in 2015, this talk is not a serious empirical account of archaeological work nor an analysis of past or ongoing political or humanitarian issues. It is purely a ‘Lite’ account – more the Indiana Jane version of some bizarre personal experiences in relation to my archaeological work in Jordan over almost four decades, within the context of endless successive conflicts. I dip into the deeper past as well the present, my sample ranging from the Black Desert, to familiar Pella, to Jerash and finally Beirut.

About the speaker
Dr Pam Watson is currently Adjunct Associate Professor in Archaeology at the University of New England, and is retired from teaching. Pam studied at the University of Sydney and first went to work in Jordan at Pella as a student in 1980 where she developed her interest in Late Antiquity. Pam has continued to be associated with that project, on and off, until the present. During the 1980s, Pam spent numerous years in Jordan working at Pella (one full year) and other sites such as Jerash, Azraq, Petra and the Edomite plateau. In the 1990s Pam was Assistant Director of the British Institute at Amman for Archaeology and History, during which time she surveyed the hinterland of Pella. Pam has also worked in Egypt,Cyprus and Australia.
