In Print or Prospect | Meeting the Nation in the Field: Taking on China’s Frontier Question (1919-1945)
In the early twentieth century the ‘frontier question’ in China loomed large over the horizon. Dismayed by the threat of imperialism on its borders, a new generation of scholars decided to venture into the field to take matters in their own hands. Meeting the Nation in the Field brings a new understanding of the politics underlying fieldwork in along the Sino-Tibetan borderlands. Their work raised critical questions about the meaning of ‘China’ at a time when border areas were being contested by numerous political centers.
In this talk, I will reflect on the creative process involved in the writing of my book by tracing the life journeys of those working on China’s frontiers, and how Western missionaries made their way into each chapter in very unexpected ways.
Meeting the Nation in the Field: Taking on China’s Frontier Question (1919-1945) will be published next year by University of British Columbia Press.
