Can there be an affirmative feminist boys studies?
Can there be an affirmative feminist boys studies?
Huddle 11 December 2019
Overview
Most research on boys and boyhood is focused on risk-reduction, representing boys as problems at school, on the streets, or in relationships, with an ambivalent (if not oppositional) relation to feminism. At the same time, anti-feminist public discourse highlighting the experiences of boys and young men is used to justify violence as well as call for the reversal of social changes that have expanded opportunities available to girls. This “huddle” will assess possible future directions for a collaborative research group, initially formed within the Dept of Gender and Cultural Studies at Sydney, working towards an affirmative feminist boysstudies.
