The Perachora Peninsula Archaeological Project: New Fieldwork around the Sanctuary of Hera

The sanctuary of Hera at Perachorais one of the earliest sanctuaries of the Greek historical periods, dating to the 8th century B.C., and also one of the wealthiest of its time. Its close relationship with Corinth is revealed by archaeological evidence as well as textual, but the sanctuary also had a town of its own that was located above the sanctuary, in an area called the Upper Plain. The town holds great interest because of its various domestic structures, fountain house, and extensive waterworks systems, but no work has been done there since the 1970s. In addition, its nature has been disputed: Payne, the site’s initial excavator (1930s), saw it as a substantial town, while Tomlinson (1969) referred to it as “a scatter of houses.” Thus, our project set out to document the material remains of the town through both surface survey and legacy data verification using methodologies available to us today, such as photogrammetry and GIS mapping. Among our aims are to bring to light the technological knowledge employed by the ancient Greek engineers who built the waterworks system, and to better understand the nature of the settlement in the Upper Plain and its relation to the sanctuary.
