“Intertidal foraging and historical ecology in the Mafia Archipelago, eastern Africa

Abstract
Research into the timing and nature of human impacts on coastal and island ecosystems is becoming a key area of archaeological research, particularly when embedded within an historical ecology framework. As a part of this growing concern with establishing the characteristics of human-environmental interactions, we have begun to develop a longer-term understanding of past marine resource use in the Mafia Archipelago (eastern Africa). Although we focus specifically on marine invertebrates, this research provides an insight into potential past marine ecosystem structure, human foraging and environmental shifts, and the implications for contemporary marine resource management. The evidence available to us at present indicates a complex and dynamic process of human interactions with intertidal habitats, however much more work is required to isolate the drivers of the changes we see in the archaeological record. As a baseline investigation this is encouraging, and highlights the need for further interdisciplinary engagement to better understand these complex issues and contribute to marine resource management
