“Archaeology and cultural heritage studies at Sydney Analytical”
Abstract
Last year Sydney University launched Sydney Analytical, a multidisciplinary facility offering state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation and research support. One of the main focusses of our facility is providing scientific analyses in the fields of archaeology, cultural heritage, conservation and palaeontology, with our current instrumentation encompassing a range of techniques to suit a wide variety of applications: infrared and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence and X-ray diffraction. Many of these instruments are also available in the form portable non-destructive systems, ideally suited for studies in the field/on-site. In this presentation we provide an overview of our capabilities and range of available instrumentation, followed by a review of case studies from textiles, resin and pigments to manuscripts and ceramics.
