Submerged but not forgotten: the future of underwater pre- contact sites in Australia
This presentation will discuss underwater cultural heritage site formation processes, the investigations and predictive modelling that have beenundertaken in Australia and the central importance of consultation and representation of First Nations people in significance assessment.
It will examine submergence of cultural material through direct human usage and through natural events. This comparison will include site formation through discard or accidental loss and through inundation, i.e.,rises in water levels (sea, riverine, lacustrine) and implications for site formation and site survival.
Sites of underwater cultural heritage formed through such processes reflect either a moment in time or extended periods of occupation and sequencing. Accordingly, they have associated challenges for site survival and investigation.
The need for and challenges faced by multi-disciplinary investigations
